Where’s Your Sacred Space?
Raise your hand if you’ve had a moment today that made you want to sprint from your house/job/spot in the Target line, screaming, “I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!”
*raises hand sheepishly*
Not only do I need Calgon to “Take Me Away” these days; I need the entire Calgon Corporation to set up shop in my house (I’ll find the damn space)–preferably alongside a full-time masseuse, reflexologist, line cook and maybe even the Dalai Lama for some extra zen.
Sadly, I am still about $10 million short of the income needed for all of the above, so the next best thing I can do? Run. Far far away.
I start driving, shut off the music, do a little chanting for a quick meditation, then put on a podcast or music and hit the road. The few minutes of silence and chanting do everything to reset and calm my mind. And from that point on I feel like a new person.
I’ve also talked before about how much I value my nightly Couch Time too. It’s the simplest thing, but one of the things I most look forward to. Here’s the routine: Clean the kitchen (cannot relax with a lurking dirty kitchen, it actually gives me twitches), light my delicious-smelling candle, make my hot lemon water, place it in a spot on the floor where I or Andrew will most definitely kick it over and spill it everywhere (hahaha), then re-make hot lemon water, grab a pillow and my laptop, and riiiiiiiiide, boo.
Netflix goes on, Andrew plops down next to me, and I’m legit in capital “H” Heaven. No, make that ALL CAPS HEAVEN.
All of this to say, it really can be the little things that help you to unwind, relax, and feel a touch less crazy on those days that you feel like you just may lose it. (See: Every day.)
And since becoming a mom, I’ve found that it is more vital than ever to carve out pockets of time for things that reset me mentally and spiritually.
So I want to know: Where is your sacred space? Have any simple routines that bring you calm in the middle of the chaos? I’d love to hear all about them. Comment below!
