How to Find Your Style Again, with Joanna Lovering from Copper + Rise

I wondered if “How to Find Your Style Again” was an appropriate title for this post, because the truth is, there is no formula to finding what your style is. Add in the complicating factors of a recent body change–whether that be a weight gain or loss, or a recent pregnancy–and the whole issue becomes even more complicated.

It’s no secret that we women often have complicated relationships with our bodies. It’s hard to extricate one’s essence from one’s appearance in a world where appearances, with social media, are front and center on all our devices, all the time.

I worry about how “Image Culture” impacts our daughters’ senses of self. I worry about the messages we send when we glorify, and profit from, cat fights. I even (stupidly!) worry about my own online persona. …If I write too much about beauty or style, will someone perceive me as superficial and dismiss the other, “real” parts of me?

That latter question is meaty enough for its own post, but today I want to talk about style in particular, and how it fits into our overall sense of self.

Having gone through three pregnancies, and seeing pretty considerable weight gains with each one (a 40-pound gain with the first two, a 50-pound gain with the third), I know first hand what it’s like to watch your body literally change before your eyes. It’s crazy. It’s beautiful, and I fully embraced it, but man… it’s wild.

And whether your body change journey involves pregnancy or there’s another reason behind it, you know it can be challenging to find your style after landing where you want to land.

And whether your body change journey involves pregnancy or there’s another reason behind it, you know it can be challenging to find your style after landing where you want to land.

That’s why I absolutely loved interviewing this week’s podcast guest, Joanna Lovering, founder and CEO of the personal styling company, Copper + Rise.

Joanna’s professional experience is vast, which is what positions her so uniquely in this market. Having worked in corporate leadership–essentially, teaching managers how to find their leadership groove–for giant companies like Jet Blue, L’Oreal and Tiffany & Co, she knows the very real connection between the way one looks, and the way one performs.

As you’ll hear in the episode, the way Joanna approaches styling is unique. She gets to know the person inside, before recommending clothing for your outside.

In this episode we talk about:

+ Why it’s so hard to nail down style, especially at certain points in life

+ Finding your style after major body changes

+ Loss and how it changes our paths

+ Switching careers

+ Starting your own brand and launching a business

+ Joanna’s experience styling an amazing wedding in Italy
