Can we talk about the sacrifices we make for our kids? Obviously, #worthit, like, in EVERY respect… but you know when you’re losing fistfuls of hair, along with hours of sleep nightly, that those little fu**ers better be worth it. (And oh they are.)
So today let’s talk about postpartum hair loss and what helped me get it back after 3 kids.
Gain Weight, Lose Hair
It’s what happens when you’re pregnant and then have the baby. Nine months of glorious hair, and for some people, skin too–and then when the baby comes, lots of us lose hair.
This is for several reasons: Fluctuating hormones do a number on our hair. For many women, those changes come in the form of thinner or more brittle hair, which usually happens anywhere from right after birth until the period of time when you stop breastfeeding.
For me, I always got what I affectionately refer to as the “cul de sac.” You know, two little circles of hair loss at the temples that are most noticeable when I pull my hair back off my face.
The Supplement That Worked for Me
Enter collagen. Now I have to say, this supplement didn’t factor into my routine until after I had our third, so within the past year or so. I just stopped nursing last April, so I didn’t start taking it every day until about 9 months ago, and let me tell you, I noticed real deal results with this stuff.
Within 3-4 months of almost every day usage—I would stir my Vital Proteins into my morning coffee, with a dash of creamer—I noticed the baby hairs at my temple growing back, and now they are fully regrown.
The Science Behind It
Among other beneficial side effects, regular collagen supplementation provides your body with amino acids that essentially give your body the building blocks it needs to grow healthy hair. Read more here.
Additionally, many users of collagen supplements reports healthier-looking skin, and sometimes even improvements in digestion. Win win win from head to butt, sister!
Here’s How I Use It, and What Brands I Like
Like I said above, I typically take my collagen in my morning coffee. Specifics: I brew one cup of Nespresso Stormio blend, put in a dollop of either almond/coconut cream or Dunkin’ Donuts Extra Extra Creamer (JUDGE ME), then blend 1 ½ to 2 scoops of either Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides or Alaya Naturals Multi-Collagen Protein Powder into the cup using my handheld milk frother. If you like your coffee sweet, you can add a pinch of sugar as well. I like the Big Tree Farms Organic Brown Coconut Sugar.
How Long Will It Take to See Results?
As always, it varies by person, but I noticed real regrowth after 3-4 months. Consistency is key, so make sure you’re using it as frequently as possible to see the best results.
